چکیده
Data and chance are two related topics that deal with uncertainty, and statistics and probability are the mathematical ways of dealing with these two ideas, respectively (Moore, 1990). Unfortunately, existing literature reveals an artificial separation between probability and data analysis in both research and instruction, which some researchers (Shaughnessy, 2003; Steinbring, 1991) have already called attention to. In a response to the calls from other researchers (e.g., Shaughnessy, 2003) and recommendations from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM, 2000), this dissertation focused on the notion of distribution as a conceptual link between data and chance. The goal of this study was to characterize a conceptual corridor that contains possible conceptual trajectories taken by students based on their conceptions of probability and reasoning about distributions. A small-group teaching experiment was conducted with six fourth graders to investigate students' development of probability concepts and reasoning about distributions in various chance events over the course of seven weeks. Each student also participated in pre-and post-interviews to assess their

Elementary School Students’ Intuitive Conceptions of Random Distribution
This research focuses on fourth-grade (9-year-old) students’ informal and intuitive conceptions of probability and distribution revealed as they worked through a sequence of tasks. These tasks were designed to study students’ spontaneous reasoning about distributions in different settings and their understanding of probability of various binomial random events that they explored with a set of p...

Data and chance are the two related topics that deal with uncertainty. On the discussions of probability and statistics in both research and instruction, the existing literature depicts an artificial separation, to which other researchers (Shaughnessy, 2003; Steinbring, 1991) have already called attention in recognition of the inseparable nature of data and chance. Hence, this paper addresses h...
متن کاملUnderstanding Distributions by Modeling Them
In current curriculum materials for middle school students in the US, data and chance are considered as separate topics. They are then ideally brought together in the minds of high school or university students when they learn about statistical inference. In recent studies we have been attempting to build connections between data and chance in the middle school by using a modeling approach made...
متن کاملDeveloping a model to enhance elementary teachers’ ability to foster functional thinking and algebraic reasoning in elementary students
Abstract: This study explores the process of change of grades 3 to 5 elementary teachers, who participated in a professional development program "Algebraic Thinking: Foundation of Elementary Mathematics". Algebraic thinking as a functional thinking was the centerpiece of the program. The “Concern Base Adaptation Model” (CBAM) was used as methodology. The results of the study showed the signific...
متن کاملModeling Random Rabbit Hops: Fourth-Graders’ Reasoning about a Binomial Distribution
Six fourth-grade students engaged in data modeling to make sense of the pattern of variability in binomial distributions. The students modeled five random rabbit-hops by tossing a fair coin to determine the most likely locations of the rabbits along a number line ranging from –5 to +5. To make sense of their empirical distributions, the students generated inscriptions of “paths” showing the pos...
